The New GM

Much has been recently written in the St Louis Dispatch about Rams President, John Shaw being unhappy with the way players have been acquired. Shaw was referencing the Rams inability to draft impact players as well as having missed on some key free agent signings. He also surprisingly stated that he made an error in naming Jay Zygmunt GM among his other various titles. I can only discuss what others' inside the organization have said about Zygmunt. He seems to be a very good negotiator, and salary cap guru. Those duties most Rams' fans would have very little if any issue with him. The perception correct or ill advised is that Zygmunt attempts to run the entire show including player personnel decisions. This perception by some is derived from Shaw being away living most of the year in Los Angeles, and having an owner who has been very hands off for awhile.
So Shaw realizes that a change is necessary but is unsure of what direction he needs to go. I don't dare guess any names but this organization has lacked a true football man for some time. Think what Bill Polian has done for the Colts, and the way the Patriots resurrect ancient players and still have them produce at high levels. Those guys are out there. My guess is when all the coaches like Holmgren could pick and choose the parameters of his job, owners gave full control of player personnel decisions to the coaches and the GM for the most part vanished like a fullback on the Rams roster.
Shaw is upset with the lack of play makers. That's great, I for one have been saying that for years. The most crucial decision Shaw will make is who will be brought in to take over that process. If he makes the correct decision the Rams could be contenders right away, look at Green Bay's turn around, or if he picks incorrectly it may be years like we had in the 90's.
Go Rams!
