Jetting to the Bottom of the NFC West

So here it is week 5 of the Haslett era and the Rams are 2-3 so far 2-7 overall. The know-it-alls may say that Haslett needs to go after this season, but as I have said all along, if the Rams finish at 4-12 they officially have had a better year than 2007. Sure, I know it's not the most sensible outlook, but it's also not the “Playoffs/Super Bowl or we suck” attitude either. What it is, however, is the optimistic view that keeps me watching each week a team that all of a sudden looks like Cloris Leachman on “Dancing with the Stars.”

I don't know about you, but personally I did not think we would be a playoff team this year anyway. Same coach, same QB, no more Bruuuuuuuuuuce, and the NFC East and AFC East staring us in the face this year, not to mention right off the bat. What I truly did not expect to see this year however is the demise of what started out as a wondrous turnaround under Haslett, with these last three games actually declining in all facets of the game, manifesting itself noticeably in the final scores. Week 7 was a manageable, respectable 16-23 loss to the Cheatriots, then week 8 a 13-34 clinic put on by Warner at the Dome, and the icing last week was the most embarrassing, humiliating, demoralizing loss EVER, a pathetic display of non-athleticism and lack of competitiveness resulting in a 3-47 shellacking by the New York Bretts. 16, 13, and now 3. Giving up 23, 34, and now 47. Our once proud franchise has again jetted to the bottom of the NFC West, and it doesn't look like we'll be taking off anytime soon. Why not?

Bulger remains the scared starter, Trent Green is still the used-up backup, and our #3 is an utter joke, a disgrace to Kurt's #13 that he chose to wear this year for the first time in his lame ass career. This week, Steven Jackson may not play again, and Isaac Bruce will be out to prove that the four games last year in which he led the Rams in receiving yardage, one of which was game two against the Whiners when he grabbed 8 passes for a TEAM SEASON HIGH 145 yds, those games did not mean he was slowing down. Those four games did not mean that he couldn't play anymore, or was unable to provide leadership anymore, or needed to be shipped of like a bag of Pepsi cans to the recycle yard. We have an uncanny ability to make no namers look like HOF'ers, so I fully expect Shaun Hill to throw for 500 yards and 6 TD's, 3 to rookie Josh Morgan. Frank Gore should gore our sorry excuse for a run defense and rush for 250 yards and 3 TD's, and the Rams will lose by 84 and be kicked out of the NFL!

That being said, I will once again sit down in front of my boob-tube and watch with anticipation as the Rams win the toss only to defer. I will cheer on as I watch my team in HD get treated like a virgin at a prison rodeo, all the while feeling good that I at least had the loyalty to pick them in my football pools. As this season winds down and we jockey for draft position, I can only wonder what could have been if Haslett had been our HC from Day 1. Hopefully next year we will get the answer.

Go Rams!
